Dass Plastikmüll in den Gewässern weltweit eines der gravierendsten Umweltprobleme unserer Weltgesellschaft ist, das dringend einer Lösung bedarf, muss nicht mehr betont werden. Die gemeinnützige Organisation One Earth – One Ocean e.V. aus München und Kiel verfolgt bereits seit 2011 das Ziel, Gewässer weltweit von Plastikmüll zu befreien. Zudem engagiert sich der Verein national und international in der Erforschung von Mikroplastik, der Bildungs- und Aufklärungsarbeit, sowie der Dokumentation zum Thema Marine Littering. Bereits 2013 wurde OEOO für das Konzept der Maritimen Müllabfuhr mit dem renommierten GreenTec Award, Europas größtem Umwelt- und Wirtschaftspreis, ausgezeichnet.
